Top 10 Hospitals of Nepal – 2014

There are high number of hospitals and more than three dozen Medical Colleges in Nepal. Initially majority of them were located inside the valley but now they span from far east to far west. This was possible due to Government’s decision to let private sector run the Medical Schools. Right now, there are four governing bodies responsible for running the program in Nepal.  They are Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Purbanchal University (PU), B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Science (BPKIHS) and Patan Academy of Health Science (PAHS). All the Medical Colleges currently running  either affiliated with TU ,  KU and PU.

BPKIHS and PAHS run their own programs at their own Teaching Hospitals located in Dharan and Patan respectively.


Nobel Medical College


Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital (P) Ltd., an affiliate to Kathmandu University, was founded in 2007. The college is located in Biratnagar, one of the major academic hubs of eastern part of Nepal. It’s key objective to impart international standard medical education to the meritorious students of Nepal and abroad enrolled for both medical and paramedical courses.

Nobel Medical College, recognized by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), has constantly maintained its academic standards at par with the requirements of other Medical Councils and Universities across the globe.

It’s internationally renowned faculties are dedicated to bolster the image of the college in national and international arena. With the contribution of such faculties, they are successfully listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).

The Hospital presently has 900 beds of its own at full function. It serves the patients from various communities of Nepal and adjoining districts of India. It has already started Super Specialty Services with eminent super specialized doctors. The hospital is expected to expand its bed strength up to 2000 by 2015.


Nepalgunj Medical College


“Excellence in Medical Education” is the motto of NMGC. Nepal Medical College


Nepal Medical College Pvt. Ltd (NMC) is situated at Attarkhel of Jorpati Village Development Committee, in Kathmandu, about 11 km. northeast of Kathmandu city. It lies at the foot hill of a mound. It has a quiet and tranquil environment, required of a medical college and a teaching hospital. The Gokarna hillock with pine trees, about half a kilometer away on the north, the Gokarna Safari Park across Bagmati river about one kilometer in the east, the terraces with trees encircling the NMC campus on the west, the NMC campus which comprises the college and Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital (NMCTH), has access to the main road through its main entrance on the southwest.

The NMC campus houses the academic buildings, library, female student and male student hostels and Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital (NMCTH). The college has departments of Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical pharmacology, Clinical Physiology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology and Pathology that are required for the first two academic years of the MBBS curriculum. The departments of Anesthesiology, Dental, Dermatology, Emergency, Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology and Surgery undertake teaching of medical students in their respective wards and out patients departments during the rest of the period of four and a half year MBBS program in addition to providing health care services to patients from their departments at NMCTH on all working days.

Universal College of Medical Sciences & Teaching Hospital


Universal College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) was established in the year 1998 with the affiliation of T.U and recognized by Nepal Medical Council (NMC) & is considered as the pioneer institute in Nepal in the field of Medicine & Dentistry. This college was established for training eminent medical professionals from all over the world. As on today, more than 500 doctors have passed out from the college & are practicing all over the world.

At present, college is offering various programs like MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. Nursing, B.N, B.MLT & B. Pharmacy. College has also started post graduation (PG) program from 2009/10 & at present it is offering MD/MS degrees in 16 specialties. It also offers post graduate degree in dentistry in 5 specialties. At present, UCMS is having 750 bedded multi speciality hospital with ultra modern equipments & renowned faculties from both Nepal & India. The college has always given importance towards the health care of the people of Nepal & their well being. It has always been in the forefront to provide the best medical care.


B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences


B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was established on Jan 18, 1993 and subsequently upgraded as an autonomous Health Sciences University on Oct 28, 1998 with a mandate to work towards developing socially responsible and competent health workforce, providing health care & involving in innovative health research. The Institute, located in Eastern Nepal, has extended its continued health services through teaching district concept to Primary Health Care Centers, District Hospitals and Zonal Hospitals in different districts of the region. This University is aptly named after Bisheshwar Prasad Koirala, Nepal’s visionary leader in social uplifting, firm believer of national integration.

This Institute is envisaged as one of the successful examples of Nepal-India co-operation. The Health Ministers of the two countries signed the Indo-Nepal agreement for establishment of BPKIHS on the Hindu auspicious day of Mahashivaratri (Mar 10, 1994).

BPKIHS has a vision of a self-governing, self-reliant international Health Sciences University attracting students and teachers from all over the world to its constantly innovative educational programs. BPKIHS has also been envisioned by the Nepali Parliament as a centre of national importance to produce skilled health workforce to meet the country’s need and also to function as a centre of excellence in the field of tropical and infectious diseases. Its best example is the ongoing Kala-azar Project in collaboration with international bodies. BPKIHS has postgraduate, undergraduate, and university certificate programs and from this year starting Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program. It has four colleges: Medical, Dental, Nursing, and Public Health with a 700-bedded Central Teaching Hospital. The medical college has well-established major clinical and basic science departments.

Postgraduate programs (MD, MS, and MSc) were started in 1999. All the MD, MS, MDS, MSc and MPH degrees awarded by BPKIHS are recognized by Nepal Medical Council and respective councils of Nepal. The MD/MS degrees (anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology & therapeutics, dermatovenerology, ENT, internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiodiagnosis, and surgery) are recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI). Similarly, there is continued effort for getting MCI recognition of other disciplines as well. While selecting candidates for MD/MS/MDS postgraduate studies, the institute has given due recognition to the medical graduates who have served in the primary health centers and /or district hospitals.

The School of Public Health was established in 2005, and it runs a two-year MPH program. The MSc Nursing Program (in Community and Psychiatry Nursing) was started in 2008. Medical Councils of Nepal, India and Sri-Lanka have recognized the MBBS program since its inception in 1994. It is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools published by the WHO.


Manipal College of Medical Sciences


Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS), Pokhara, started in 1994 as a collaboration between the Manipal Group and the Government of Nepal.The 700 bed Manipal Teaching Hospital (MTH), Pokhara, was inaugurated in 1998. The college and hospital, with modern facilities for medical education and healthcare is affiliated to Kathmandu University.

It offers a five and a half year MBBS Degree (four and a half years + one year internship). Besides the MBBS program, postgraduate courses are available in the basic sciences and some clinical subjects (MD: Three years; MSc: Two years).


Bir Hospital


Bir Hospital is the oldest hospital of Nepal. This hospital was established in 1947 BS, under the name of contemporary Prime Minister Bir Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Initially it was a seven bed hospital with 5 staffs. Today it has a proud history of 125 years and the first hospital of Nepal where the practice of modern medicine commenced.Till eighties services including gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry were available in this very hospital. With the induction of super specialty and increasing workload in the limited premises these services were shifted to Indra Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah Maternity hospital Thapathali, Kanti Bal Hospital Maharajgunja and Patan mental hospital Lalitpur respectively.

Bir hospital provided medical education to different levels of health personnel as per the needs of country. Starting with simple wound dressing and compounder training middle level health personnel training for health assistants was started in 2014 BS, in the name of Civil Medical School.This training was continued till 2018 BS. Similarly, nursing education started in 2013 BS and Mrs Rup Kumari Gurung was the chief of nursing school. This hospital was used for the clinical practice by Institute of Medicine, Tribhuwan University, for their courses of Auxiliary Health Worker, Health Assistant and graduate medical education. In 2035/36 BS this institute was accredited by Royal college of Edinburgh as centre for training for fellowship in surgery and membership in Medicine. This was an era of commencement of postgraduate education in Nepal. From 2035 BS to 2050 BS no government scholarship was provided for postgraduate education in Nepal. There was a big gap between undergraduate and postgraduate doctors. It was realized that the post graduate medical education should exist in Nepal only. This led to the formation of postgraduate medical education coordination committee (PGMECC) in 2051/52BS by the valley group of hospitals. In 2059/60 BS concept of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was born. National Academy of Medical Sciences was established in 2060 BS (2002 AD) and started course of MD and MS. Bir hospital is an embodied hospital of NAMS. NAMS has taken Maternity Hospital Thapathali, Kanti Children Hospital Maharajgunj, Nepal Army hospital, Patan Hospital and Nepal eye hospital as affiliated hospitals for the program. Under the memorandum understanding with these hospitals programs are running. Currently, this institute is enrolling around 100 MD, MS and MDS residents each year. Similarly super specialty fellowship course on neurosurgery, Fellow of national academy of medical sciences (FNAMS), was started in 2061 BS (2004 AD). In addition, Doctorate of Medicine and Master of Chirurgery (DM, M.Ch) started in 2067 BS (2010 AD).

Historically, nursing program started in 2013 BS in the name of Mahabaudha Nursing College. With advent of new education system in Nepal Mahabaudha Nursing College was put under the Tribhuwan University in 2028 BS. Then this program was shifted to Institute of Medicine Maharajgunj in 2044 BS. In 2046 BS nursing program was restarted in Bir hospital with the affiliation to Tribhuwan University. With the establishment of NAMS in 2060, nursing program came under the NAMS. In 2062 BS Post Basic Bachelor course in Nursingwas started and now we are at the verge of starting Master of Nursing program.


Lumbini Medical College & Research Center Pvt. Ltd.

Although health is a major responsibility of the government, considering the multitude problems faced by the country, it is impractical to hope and demand for the resolution of every problem from the government. Hence, this large project was implemented in a step wise process by mobilizing local regional Nepalese entrepreneurs.

This year, it has been upgraded to a 600 bedded hospital with expansion of various services and facilities like CT scan, Fluoroscopy, Laparoscopy and minimal invasive surgery, Uretero – renoscopy (URS) and ICPL, highly equipped operation theaters, sub – speciality services etc.

Before affiliation to Kathmandu University we had an opportunity to grandly organize the VI th National Surgical Conference of the Society of Surgeon of Nepal on 22nd -23rd December, 2007. We have also been granted the permission to run the Nursing Program which has further expanded our scope for producing capable manpower.

Its vigorous attempts have successfully been paid on receiving an affiliation from the renowned Kathmandu University of Nepal on 16th Nov, 2008. The institution is also in the process being enlisted in the World Dictionary of Medical School by WHO.
In this advanced era of Medical Science we have given ample emphasis on research in various areas requiring great attention.
