During the Tsum Valley Trek, the most common means of accommodation are lodges, teahouses, and camping. In this 20-day adventure, you will stay 3 days in Kathmandu at a 3-start hotel. Here, you will get everything from a private room and bathrooms to full connectivity Wifi and a variety of meals. As you ascend higher, the accommodations start to get basic. From the first night of your trekking journey, you will start to stay in the teahouse. They provide you with minimal facilities.

You will get a shared room with two beds, blankets, and a pillow, along with a shared bathroom. They offer you communal dining space where you can have your meals and share experiences with fellow travelers. As you ascend higher, the amenities in teahouses start to get more basic with an increase in cost. Almost every one of the teahouses offers you with a Wifi and charging services, with some additional cost. However, the internet, as you gain elevation, starts to become unstable. A total of 17 out of 20 days are stayed in teahouses.

Meals Option During Tsum Valley Trek

Teahouses offer meals throughout the Tsum Valley Trek. During our 20-day adventure, you will have a total of 19 Breakfast, 17 Lunch, and 19 Dinner sets. Although you will be in the remote location of the trekking area, you will get the best locally sourced foods here that keep you energized. From traditional Nepali dishes to some international cuisines, this trek offers you a limited variety of meals to choose from.

We generally recommend you consider eating vegetarian foods for hygiene purposes. The non-vegetarian items here can not be fresh due to the high altitude. We further suggest you carry light snacks such as nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars for quick energy boosts during the walk. Here is the list of all the dishes you will get during the journey. Make sure you tell your preference to your guide, as he will help you manage it.

You need to drink plenty of water throughout the Tsum Valley Trek to stay hydrated and maintain your energy levels. Common sources of water during the trek include streams and rivers. However, we generally do not recommend drinking water directly from these sources as it may not be safe or healthy. To ensure your safety, we highly recommend drinking boiled water, which is typically available at teahouses along the trekking route.

However, it can be quite a challenge for you to carry the boiled water throughout the day. As a perfect alternative, you can consider taking water purification tablets with you. This helps you filter the water and make it drinkable. Additionally, we suggest carrying a reusable water bottle. This helps you minimize plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability. This step not only enhances your safety but also makes you a responsible traveler.

If you are planning to Manaslu Circuit and TSUM Valley trekking, then you need two types of permits, and these are
Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit The Tsum Valley Trek lies within the Manaslu Conservation Area, thus, to enter this area, getting the permit is essential. The park starts from 126 kilometers from Kathmandu. The entry point of the trek is Jagat. The permit is issued to protect and conserve the conservation area, which is home to 1000 diverse flora and fauna. You can obtain this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or can even get it at the entry point.

Restricted Area Permit

Tsum Valley lies within the restricted region of Nepal, so you will need a restricted area permit. This permit is necessary to cross Jagat (there’s a check-post). This restricted area permit is only issued to group trekkers (more than two) accompanied by a licensed trek guide. The trekkers need to get this permit from the Department of Immigration, Kathmandu, and require a long list of documents. Each day of the Tsum Valley Trek gives you a unique experience. Your day starts early, usually around 6 AM, with the sunrise over the hills and Himalayas. After enjoying breakfast, you begin trekking between 7 and 8 AM. The morning trek is often more manageable, covering about 3 to 4 hours before stopping at a tea house for lunch. You will rest for about an hour during the lunch break, recharging for the afternoon.

After lunch, the trek resumes with another 2 to 3 hours of hiking. The afternoon sections are typically more challenging due to the rugged terrain and frequent ascents and descents. By 4 or 5 PM, you will reach the day’s destination and settle into your tea house. Here, you have time to explore the village or simply relax and unwind after the day’s efforts.

Dinner is served between 6 and 7 PM, followed by a briefing from your guide about the next day’s plan. The evening is a chance to connect with fellow trekkers, play games, read, or learn some basic Nepali phrases. Most trekkers choose to rest early to prepare for the next day’s adventure, ensuring they are ready for the journey ahead.

Communication during the Tsum Valley Trek can be limited due to the remote location, but you will still find basic facilities in certain villages. Mobile networks like NCELL and NTC (Nepal Telecom) have coverage in some areas, though they can be patchy and unreliable, especially in higher altitudes or deep valleys. It is recommended to buy a local SIM card with a data package in Kathmandu before the trek, as this gives you the best chance of staying connected.

Internet facilities are available in tea houses and lodges in major villages like Philim, Chhokang Paro, and Nile. However, the quality of Wi-Fi can be slow and inconsistent, particularly as you ascend. Most places charge around $2 to $5 per hour for Wi-Fi access. To start your adventure towards the Tsum Valley trek, you should first travel to Kathmandu. From there, you will drive towards Arughat by public bus or private vehicle. Taking about 8 hours, Arughat is the starting point of your trekking journey. From Arughat, your trek begins with a scenic journey to Soti Khola, passing through small villages and terraced fields. The trail gradually becomes rugged as you head toward Machhakhola and then to Jagat, a checkpoint for permits. From Jagat, you trek to Philim, where the trail splits for the Tsum Valley or the main Manaslu Circuit.

If you choose Tsum Valley, you will pass charming villages like Chumling, Chhokang Paro, and Nile, surrounded by stunning Himalayan views and rich Tibetan culture. Most of the trek section can be challenging. It includes steep ascents, narrow trails, and landslide-prone areas, especially between Deng and Namrung. The Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) is the toughest part, with its high altitude, cold winds, and long walking hours. After crossing the pass, the trail descends through Bhimthang, Tilije, and Dharapani, where the trek ends.

To reach Arughat for the start of your Tsum Valley Trek itinerary, here are your transportation options:

• Public Bus: From Kathmandu, take a local bus heading to Arughat. The journey takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, offering an economical option but with basic comfort.
• Private Jeep: A direct private jeep from Kathmandu to Arughat is a more comfortable and time-efficient choice. It takes around 6 hours, depending on road conditions.
• Helicopter Charter: For a luxurious and quick option, you can charter a helicopter to a nearby location, such as Arughat or Gorkha Bazaar, though it is significantly more expensive.

Total Distance

The total driving distance from Kathmandu to Arughat is 75 kilometers. We will get here via a jeep ride, which will take around 8 hours. Due to the bumpy and paved road section, the travel can be quite tiring. Upon reaching Aurughat, your trekking adventure begins. The total trekking distance covered is 165 kilometers. In about 16 days, you can complete this overall adventure.

As you reach Arughat at the end, you will have to follow the same 75-kilometer ride back to Kathmandu. Here is the breakdown of the total distance covered in each day;

Guide and Porter

You will need a licensed guide and possibly a porter to make your trek more manageable. A guide costs around $25 to $35 per day, providing essential support with navigation, permits, and cultural insights. If you hire a porter, you will pay approximately $15 to $25 per day, and they will help carry your heavy load, allowing you to trek more comfortably. Do not forget to budget for tips, which are customary and range from 10 to 15% of their total fee, as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work.

Transportation Costs

Your journey starts with transportation from Kathmandu to Arughat, costing about $10 to $15 by public bus or $150 to $200 for a private jeep shared among your group. If you continue to Soti Khola or Machhakhola, local transport adds $5 to $10 more. On the return, you will spend a similar amount traveling from the trek endpoint, such as Dharapani, back to Kathmandu. Opting for a private jeep ensures greater comfort and flexibility, especially if you are traveling with others.

Permits

You will require multiple permits for this trek due to its restricted and conservation-protected status. The Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) costs around $100 to $75 per week, depending on the season, while the Tsum Valley Permit is around $40 per week. Additionally, you need the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and MCAP (Manaslu Conservation Area Permit), each costing about $30. Make sure to arrange these permits through a travel agency or your guide before starting the trek, as they are mandatory.

Personal Expenses Along the Trek

While trekking, you will spend on meals, snacks, bottled water, and occasional luxuries like charging devices or Wi-Fi. Expect to budget $20 to $30 per day, but the costs will rise as you ascend to higher altitudes. Treats like hot showers or better meals can cost $2 to $5 each. It is also good to carry cash for emergencies or extras, as ATMs are unavailable along the trail. If you are buying new trekking gear, such as boots, jackets, or a sleeping bag, you should budget around $200 to $500, depending on the quality and your needs.

To overcome those difficulties and get the best trekking experience, you need to indulge in some training activities. It is very recommended that you do some strength-building exercises and cardiovascular exercises, as well as maintain a balanced diet and mental health. Here is a brief on those:

Physical strength-building exercises

Trekking to Tsum Valley requires a good level of strength as you will be trekking in rugged terrain. You can include exercises like weightlifting, squats, lunges, pushups, and many more to develop your strength. You can also add resistance training to simulate carrying a backpack during the trek.

Cardiovascular (Aerobic) exercises

As important as having strength, it is also very important for you to have a good level of stamina for the higher altitude. If you are ever planning on taking a solo trip, then Tsum Valley Trek is not the right option for you. As the trek lies within some of the restricted areas of Nepal, the Government here has made it compulsory to trek in a minimum number of two. This rule was made for safety concerns for trekkers because of some life-threatening risks involved. Thus, if you are single, you need to hire a guide along with you, making it two.

In addition to that, a group trek towards Tsum Valley is perfect if you are a budget-conscious traveler, as the cost of traveling in a group is slightly lower than that of a solo.

It does not matter if you are in a group; it is also compulsory for you to hire a guide, as per the rules. ATM & Currency

Whenever you are trekking in Nepal, you need to carry the Nepali Rupees. This is the only currency that is acceptable here. You can get the currency exchanged upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. There are many money-exchange shops where you can exchange money. Similarly, local banks also offer you an exchange service with some charges. In addition to that, ATMs are also another way for you to get Nepali Reppes, which can be accessed using a foreign card. In cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, ATMs are open 24/7.

However, there is a limitation of NPR 35,000 TO NPR 50,000 if you get the money from ATMs. You can get the money here; however, trekking to higher altitudes means you will get little to no ATM for money. Make sure you have enough cash with you whenever you are trekking to higher altitudes. As you gain elevation, you will get no ATMs or any other money exchange services. If you do not have enough cash, this can hamper your additional expenses during the journey.

Visa

You need to get a tourist visa if you are trekking here in Nepal. The Department of Immigration in Nepal has been providing Visas on Arrival. This process is easy and quick. However, during the peak season, you are expected to stand in queues. To avoid those ques, you can also get a visa before your arrival. You can get this from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions. The only thing you need to remember is to visit Nepal within a year of getting this visa. 2 passport-size photos, a passport with 6 months validity, and a visa fee are required to get the tourist visa. Children below 10 years old and SAARC nationals do not have to pay visa fees.

Visa Extension Fee

Tourist visa extension is done for a minimum of 15 days with USD 45 and USD 3 per day for additional days.

You should always follow a sustainable trekking experience. Meaning that you should hike in a way that reduces environmental impact and protects the natural world. You should reduce the amount of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste during the adventure as a part of being responsible tourists. Additionally, following the leave no trace behind the practice is essential.

You should make sure all the wattages are disposed of properly. Don’t miss out on showcasing your respect for the culture and tradition of the area. To support local communities, you can have food in local restaurants and buy souvenirs there. You also requested the use of a reusable water bottle and a lunch box made of metal, wood, or glass. Make sure your trekking leaves minimal to no bad impacts in the area.

Luggage and Backpack Weight

We generally recommend you not overpack. As we provide you with a service and we assign you a proter, we recommend that you do not exceed 9 kg per trekker for the adventure. We generally assign one porter to two trekkers. The porter will carry a total of 18 kg in a duffle bag for you. Aside from that, you can also carry a day bag of 5 kg, which you will be carrying with you. This bag should contain all the valuable documents and some snacks for the journey.

Note: Upon your request, we also offer you a private porter service. But for this, you need to pay the additional cost.

The Tsum Valley and Manaslu trek come together at Chumling, where the trails from both valleys meet. You will start your journey in Arughat, then head toward Soti Khola and enter the Manaslu Circuit. From Soti Khola, you will walk to the Tsum Valley, experiencing its peaceful villages, monasteries, and beautiful surroundings. After exploring the Tsum Valley, you will merge back onto the Manaslu Circuit trail and continue towards higher altitudes.

Merging both treks gives you a mix of culture and adventure. The Tsum Valley is calm and rich in Tibetan culture, with easier trails to walk. On the other hand, the Manaslu Circuit offers more challenging trekking and views of the giant Manaslu mountain. By combining both, you get to enjoy a unique experience of peaceful valleys and tough mountain paths while taking in amazing views of the mountains along the way.

As an alternative to 20 days of adventure, the Tsum Valley Trek can be completed within 10 to 11 days, following the short itinerary. The trek starts from the same location. However, it requires more hiking, covering longer distances daily. This increases the challenge of the overall adventure, thus making the short Tsum Valley trek mainly suitable for experienced trekkers only. As the trek includes a hike of 7 to 8 hours daily, you will get fast towards a higher altitude. Demanding a high level of physical and mental fitness, completing this trek can be a huge hassle if you are a beginner to this adventure.

Although we offer you a short day of 10 to 11 days, contrary to the Tsum Valley, we generally do not recommend you choose this adventure if you are new to it. However, the only advantage you will get from this trek is the cost reduction. As you will be staying shooter in the Himalayas, the cost of meals and accommodation will decrease, making it slightly affordable. Overall, you can choose the Tsum Valley Short Trek if you have prior experience, limited time, and want to experience similar natural and cultural beauty in the Manaslu region.
